Preaching in the DR, Pastor Alan A. Lutz

I wanted to share my husband’s report on his time in the DR, for those who might be interested.  May we all be faithful to share the hope that is within us.  All for Jesus!
Dear Friends:

I want to thank you for praying for me while away on a preaching mission to the Dominican Republic! Your intercession was, no doubt, of great significance in making the trip a wonderfully fruitful time. I got home at 11:00 last night, safe and sound after dancing around area thunder storms in our Delta jet as we returned to Atlanta. Let me share a few trip highlights and lessons.

I arrived in Santo Domingo a week ago Monday afternoon and was picked up by my pastor friend Roberto Ozuna. We drove a half hour east to his town of San Pedro de Macoris and had dinner at his “casita” (small house) with his wife. I stayed at a small motel just down the street, which was very convenient. I preached Tuesday through Friday evenings then Sunday morning and evening at five Bible churches in the community. The pastors were very gracious to share their pulpits with me, and I was much encouraged by their godliness and loving congregations. I taught on themes of the Gospel, the Five Solas of the Protestant Reformation, the Deity of Christ, Christ as our Prophet/Priest/King, Justification, and Spiritual Growth. I shared a devotional on “fighting the good fight of faith” at a baseball clinic for all-star young men one morning. Some of the coaches there had been professional players in the U.S. in years past. In fact, the same city of San Pedro is home to Sammy Sosa, Robinson Cano, and other baseball greats. The latter’s picture was on the front of the Delta magazine on the plane, and in his article he said that everyone in his home town knows everything about baseball! I had to be humble after the Dominicans beat our U.S. team last week in the World Baseball Challenge. Saturday evening we enjoyed a musical drama of The Pilgrim’s Progress at the Central Bible Church. You can imagine I was interested in seeing that. I was able to share about our Lord Jesus and the Word of God with those I sat beside on the plane both down and back. Especially last evening the third-year law student had a keen interest in the Gospel and committed to reading the Bible!

Sincerely in our Christ Jesus our Savior, the Lord of the Nations,

Pastor Alan

Dispelling the Darkness

And the spirit cried, and rent him sore, and came out of him (Mark 9:26)

Evil never surrenders its hold without a sore fight.  We never pass into any spiritual inheritance through the delightful exercises of a picnic, but always through the grim contentions of the battlefield.  It is so in the secret realm of the soul.  Every faculty which wins its spiritual freedom does so at the price of blood.  Apollyon is not put to flight by a courteous request; he straddles across the full breadth of the way, and our progress has to be registered in blood and tears.  This we must remember or we shall add to all the other burdens of life the gall of misinterpretation.  We are not “born again” into soft and protected nurseries but in the open country where we suck strength from the very terror of the tempest.  “We must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God.” Dr. J.H. Jowett

Are You Dressed For the Day?

Spiritual Warfare Prayer by Charles Stanley
Good morning Lord.  Thank you for assuring me of victory today if I will but follow Your battle plan.  So by faith I claim victory over ________ (list things you know you will face today)
To prepare myself for battle ahead, by faith I put on the BELT OF TRUTH.  The truth about You Lord; that You are a sovereign God who knows everything about me, both my strengths and my weaknesses.  Lord, You know my breaking point and have promised not to allow me to be tempted beyond what I am able to bear.  The truth about me, Lord, is that I am a new creature in Christ and have been set free from the power of sin.  I am indwelt with the Holy Spirit who will guide me and warn me when danger is near.  I am Your child, and nothing can separate me from Your love.  The truth is that You have a purpose for me this day; someone to encourage, someone to share with, someone to love.
Next, Lord I want to, by faith, put on the BREASTPLATE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS.  Through this, I guard my heart and my emotions.  I will not allow my heart to attach itself to anything that is impure.  I will not allow my emotions to rule in my decisions.  I will set them on what is right and good and just.  I will live today by what is true, not by what I feel.
Lord, this morning I put on the SANDLES OF THE GOSPEL OF PEACE, I am available to You, Lord.   Send me where You will.  Guide me to those who need encouragement or physical help of some kind.  Use me to solve conflicts wherever they may arise.  Make me a calming presence in every circumstance in which You place me.  I will not be hurried or rushed, for my schedule is in Your hands.  I will not leave a trail of tension and apprehension.  I will leave a track of peace and stability everywhere I go.
I now take up the SHEILD OF FAITH, Lord.  My faith is in You and You alone.  Apart from You, I can do nothing.  With You, I can do all things.  No temptation that comes my way can penetrate Your protecting hand.  I will not be afraid, for You are going with me throughout this day.  When I am tempted, I will claim my victory out loud ahead of time, for You have promised victory to those who walk in obedience to Your Word.  So by faith I claim victory, even now, because I know there are fiery darts heady my way even as I pray.  Lord, You already know what they are and have already provided the way of escape.
Lord, by faith I am putting on the HELMET OF SALVATION, You know how satan bombards my mind day and night with evil thoughts, doubt, and fear.  I put on this helmet that will protect my mind.  I may feel the impact of his attacks, but nothing can penetrate this helmet.  I choose to stop every impure and negative thought at the door of my mind.  And with the helmet those thoughts will get not further.   I elect to take every thought captive;  I will dwell on nothing but what is good and right and pleasing to You.
Lastly, I take up the SWORD OF THE SPIRIT, which is YOUR WORD.  Thank you for the precious gift of YOUR WORD.  It is strong and powerful and able to defeat even the strongest of satan’s onslaughts.  Your Word says that He that is in me is greater than he that is in the world.  So by faith I take up the strong and powerful sword of the Spirit, whish is able to defend me in time of attack, comfort me in time of sorrow, teach me in time of meditation, and to prevail against the power of the enemy on behalf of others who need the truth to set them free.
Lord, I go rejoicing that you have chosen me to represent You to this lost and dying world.  May others see Jesus in me, and may satan and his hosts shudder as Your power is made manifest in me.  In Jesus’ name I pray…Amen!

The Living Dead: Zombie Apocalypse?

No, this really isn’t a post on reanimated corpses!

Kay Arthur, of Precept Ministries, actually  coined the above phrase (The Living Dead) long before the current craze. I am actually preparing a lesson from one of her Bible studies, “Lord is it Warfare? Teach Me to Stand.” As I read Ephesians 2:1-13 I was reminded of my painful past, but more importantly, what HE has done!

Personalizing what the Apostle Paul wrote to the church I can say, “I was once dead in my sins, in which I walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air. (Satan) I lived in the lusts of my flesh, indulging the desires of my flesh and mind.  I was a child of wrath.

(Oh how my spirit soars when I read those precious words!)  BUT GOD, being rich in mercy, because of His great love for me, even when I was DEAD in my sin, He made me alive together with Christ  and raised me up with Him and seated me with Him in the heavenly places, in Christ Jesus.

I have been saved by grace through faith; and that is not of myself, it is the gift of God; not as a result of my works, so that I cannot boast.

I am His workmanship created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, for me to walk in.

I was at one time separate from Christ, excluded from the commonwealth of Israel, and a stranger to the covenants of promise, I had not hope and was without God in the world.

BUT now in CHRIST JESUS I who formerly was far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.”

How about you?  Are you fully alive, or one of the living dead?  Can you insert your name in Ephesians chapter 2 verses 4-10? If not, don’t remain a zombie lost in your sins!  As a friend of ours once said, “My worst day as a Christian is infinitely better than my best day as a non-Christian.”
